Hunting in Pennsylvania
I have been neglecting my blog the past few weeks. My life has been very busy, a typical day for me might go something like this:
6:30-7:06 – Wake Up, Get Ready
7:15-2:20 – School
2:45-4:20 – Lifting
4:35-6:00 – Relax/Homework
6:00-7:00 – Work
7:00-8:00 – Make & Eat Dinner
8:00-9:30 – Homework
~10:30 – Bed
As you can tell, I have a very busy life right now. On top of that, last Monday was the opening day of deer season in PA. Every Saturday, we drive over to my grandfather’s house at 4:30am, hunt for a few hours, drive back for two hours, then go to either my dad’s or my sister’s dance/band/chior concerts. I hope you will forgive me for my low posting rate.
But, this post is about hunting, not my busy schedule. My dad’s side of my family are all avid hunters. Every year, we all get together the Sunday after Thanksgiving. We sight in out guns, maybe have a Thanksgiving meal, and then play poker until early morning.
We all wake up at around 6:30 on Monday morning, most years it is raining and warm, horrible weather for hunting. After getting a bite to eat, we all head out to the gravel pits behind my grandpa’s house. The gravel pits are in the process of being leveled out because they are not being used anymore. Around the entire perimiter is a hill/ledge that we stand on to get a great view into the woods. We are good friends with all the neighbors, so we can shoot pretty much anywhere we want.
Except in the gravel pits.
Two years ago, we had a new hunter in the pits. He was a new employee, and a greedy one. For the past three years, he has cut six trails through the woods, brought in a shanty with a bulldozer, and that isn’t the bad part. Last year, he started posting no trespassing signs up at the exact locations we have stood for the past 15 years. The no tresspassing signs are not placed every 50 yards, they are not signed, and, of course, are nowhere near where his shanty is set up. This year, he brought in a group of four other hunters, set up in expensive tree stands in the woods below where we hunt. He has forced us out of our spot, and it sucks, but we just move down 10 feet off the property. I hope he stumbles across this post though.
The deer herd was really bad this year too. Nobady saw a buck all morning, just 5 doe between the four of us. The second and third weekends, nobody saw anything. The only person to get something in my family was my grandpa, who got a very small doe while hunting halfway through the second week. Hopefully we’ll have much better luck next year.
