LBC Rides from the Past - April 2006

Northern Exposure (A) Apr 1
I was proud and honored to have the Lititz artist, Andy Smith, on my ride since I have 14 of his prints. It was a windy spring day. Going into Lebanon County, we split into 2 groups. Around Colebrook, we re-grouped because the front group had taken a wrong turn. We finished the ride together. Ken Stadden was the first rider over Pinch Hill. Way to go Ken! Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Tom Boonen (sweep), Ken Stadden, Ken Lessans, Tom Hunt, Andy Smith, March T. Diem, Brian Sowatsky, and Damon Schlott.

April Fool's Ride (D) Apr 1
April Fool's ride--let's do it backwards!!! The action wasn't as easy as the thought. Right turns are not always left turns in reverse. Leader discovered this truth during the first few turns. The entire group worked together to produce a successful outcome. Careful riding near John Rohrkemper on his mountain bike--when the tire blows, it's deafening. Riders: Karen Drawbaugh (leader), Phil Wright, Linda Wright, Ed DiPilla, Renee DiPilla, Joey DePilla, Harry Campbell, Ray Landis, Jim Payton, Alta Nolt, Chris Mayfield, Greg Mayfield, Amy Jo Mitchell, John Rohrkemper, Larry Procell (?sp.).

Drager Drag (B) Apr 2
Riders: Jeff DeLong (leader), Pearl DeLong (sweep), Andy Charles, Steve Mazeski, Rick Reisinger, Candae Deen, Jim Drumm, Tim Good, Matt London, Gil Dalsieri, Harry Smith, Steve Holland, Mary Stadden, John Peregoy, Kevin Lunz, and non-LBC members Scott Bron and James Richards.

Rapho Ramble (B) Apr 2
Today's Rapho Ramble ride was very well attended by 19 club riders along with 3 non-LBC members and the leader (Sylvia, aka syllybee). A few of these riders had already ridden the morning ride and said "what the hey", it's a lovely Spring day with temps in the low 60s, light wind and blue skies, so what is a few more afternoon miles. And even though I also heard them say that they were going to take it "easy", I never saw them again until the end. Celeste, Chris and I enjoyed great conversation as we gingerly rode along. Later we were joined by JP who turned back to check on us. Then Doug joined our merry band and we finally met up with a few more riders at Sheetz in Mt. Joy. After a few minutes of rest, we were on our way but with minor detour in mind. We avoided the hilly climb of Strickler Rd, instead we ran into a section of road with gravel. Most of us decided to walk our bikes. Back on course, we bid good-bye to Peregoy [Celeste had already headed home earlier before the Sheetz stop] and continued our way along Back Run Road. Just as we started a climb, we heard a chain noise. Poor John Mullineaux was stopped in his tracks. After making the necessary adjustments, he road back down so he would have more momentum on the climb. Wouldn't you know it, chain/shifting problems again. Heck with it, so John decided to walk the remaining portion of the hill. He wasn't the only one either. Mike Gibson was caught in the big ring when he heard Mullineaux having shifting problems and stopped. It's nice to know I'm not the only one to walk hills. I also developed shifting problems but the hills were over and I was able to deal with the "auto shift". Even with Mullineaux's help, the "auto shift" persisted. Other than that, we had a great ride. Chris stayed with us the entire time even though she hadn't been out much this year. Good going Chris! When we got back to the parking lot, Brian told me that the group he was with, averaged 17mph. Geesh, and this was the group that had already ridden the morning ride. Okay, you guys deserve to be tired now. Thanks for coming out and see you all on the next ride. Riders: Sylvia Newcomer (leader), Emily McKeon, Doug Stark, Tim Good, Mark Ward, John Mentzer, Mike Gibson, John Mullineaux, Lew Hershey, Craig Shreiner, Brian Mitchell, John Donati, Diane Lausman, Bob Colton, Lou Gray, John Peregoy, Celeste Neuhard, Cindy Davis, Ed and Bobbi Fearnow. Non-LBC members: Ron Herr, Ryan Dissinger and Chris Brubaker.

E-town to Wherever (and back) (C) Apr 1
22 mi on the Conewago and Lebanon Valley Rail Trails 64 F, overcast / cloudy / occasional sprinkle; windy on the return. It was a good ride! Eight of us met at the Conewago Trailhead along Rt. 230 outside of Elizabethtown. Unfortunately, the leader did not have cue sheets to offer for the day's ride, but I am happy to report no one got lost or strayed (too) far off course. We didn't quite stay on pace (advertised at 11 mph) since for some it was one of the first rides for the season. The group soon broke into two, with one forging out ahead, but still generally within sight. We eventually made it to Wherever-which was described as being about half way between Here and There before we started. It actually turned out to be a little spot at mile maker 6 on the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail on the approach to the Mt. Gretna grade. It tried to rain a few times during the ride, but we got lucky and it held off, which is a good thing on the Conewago Trail-it can get a bit messy on that portion of the trail real quick if there is rain! But, it had been dry for quite some time so no water to deal with, and it looks like several spots had been repaired sometime over the off-season months. There was a bit (actually a lot in several spots) of extra wind on the return from Wherever, which helped to cancel the easier glide we were expecting coming down the Mt. Gretna grade. This also had the groups split up again after our restart for our return from Wherever. But overall-A very nice ride! Looking forward to having more rail-trail rides in the future. And again, I am sorry for the one rider that came all the way out for our ride, but did not realize it was going to be on the trail so she had the wrong bike along. We will try to better describe/advertise the next rail-trail ride so this does not happen again. Riders: Tom Barron (ride leader), Terry Brown, John McKelvey, Gary Musser, Stephen Ransing, Bob Walker, Janielle Willemin, Chuck Wissing.

New Holland Long (C) Apr 2

Stackstown Spin (B) Apr 8
Precipitation: 100%. Participation: 0%. (Candae Deen, leader) Rapturous Ride (B) Apr 8 It was a beautiful day . . . For ducks that is. Steve and his rain bike and Jim with his positive outlook (positive that it was going to rain all day) and I with my all weather bike decided that it was just raining too hard to ride. I hope the ducks enjoyed the day. We sure didn't. Disappointed riders were Jim Forster (sweep), Steve Mazeski (peloton) and Don Whitehead (leader).

Farmland Meander (C) Apr 9
This is easily the nicest ride on our rolodex. After trying to keep to the advertised pace of 12 mph, the group broke loose after the stop at the Hess Station on Oregon Pike. I even came in at 13.5 mph after fixing a flat 5 miles from the finish. Thanks to Gary Musser, and Chris and Greg Mayfield, who came back to see that I was able to make the repair. After three years with nary a flat, I'm on my second already. Riders: John Cardos (leader), John McKelvey (sweep), Scott Jones, Rose Ward, Gary Musser, Ray Landis, Greg Mayfield, Christ Mayfield, Kevin Lunz, Tom Mellinger, Traceylyn Gardner, Jim Drumm, Pearl DeLong, Jeff DeLong, John Furry and non-LBC member Joe Kealey.

Tom's Special (D) Apr 9
Ann Schleef was to lead this ride, but stated it was too cold for her to ride and left one cue sheet with John. We had 9 riders show, so he asked the health club to make copies for us. John didn't want to lead so I took the job. Sunny and temp about 49 degrees and little wind. Beautiful day, nice ride and good group. One small bump of wheels by two riders-no injuries. This was a first ride this year for a couple of the riders. Riders: Judy Flowers (leader), John Mentzer (sweep), Amy Mitchell, Joe Auchey, Helen Weber, Ray Landis, Rose Phillips and the one that didn't sign in and got away.

Tour de Marietta (B) Apr 9
After a terrible Saturday, Sunday turned into a pretty nice day. The warmer weather brought out 22 riders; however, we could see that this group wasn't going to stay together for too long. We made it to Landisville and the group broke apart. The fast group made pretty good time and the second group stayed close to the advertised pace. All-in-all, we had a real nice ride. It was good seeing so many people come out. Riders: Mike Gibson (leader), Dave Kessler, Jim Mier, Rich Wagner, John Donati, Diane Lausman, Mark Ward, Mary Stadden, David Y. Hooper, David J. Hooper, Brian Mitchell, Vaughn Good, John Mullineaux, Carl Kreider, Craig Shreiner, Don K?, Lou Gray, Warren Buch, Ed Gray, Gil Palmieri, Candae Deen, Ed Fearnow and Bobbi Fearnow.

Rapho Ramble (C) Apr 15
Sunny and 75°! However, we had a headwind more than half the time at around 20 mph! Bill had another flat-Gary came to the rescue and patched it well enough to get home. He had a bad tire. Great company on a challenging ride. Riders: Carol Weisser (leader), Gary Musser, Rose Ward, Rebecca Hoyle, Jim Drumm, Mark Ward, Tim Hoyle and Bill Weisser.

East Pete West (D) Apr 15
Great weather for the 10 o'clock D ride. Irene Camp is back from Arizona and showed up to ride with us. Steve Mentzer had a flat the rear of course. Harry Campbell and Connie Simmons were with him. I went back in time to put his wheel on for him. Connie had every thing under control. While I was back with the flat Jack Mentzer was good enough to lead the pack. The lead switched several times Me, Jack and Harry Campbell. That's the way I like it--takes all the pressure off of me. Ha! Oh yeah Stevie Schmol was supposed to ride with us he also had a flat--on his vehicle driving to the ride. Riders: Ray Landis (Off and on leader), Harry Campbell, Walter Linton, Harold Fulmer, Irene Camp, Connie Simmons, Jack Mentzer, Steve Mentzer, John Mentzer, Janielle Willemin, Steve Holland, John Rohrkemper and non-LBC member Amy Sahn.

Bigger Lititz Loop (B) Apr 16
As the seven of us departed C.V. High School and headed out, we ran into a strong headwind that would stay with us for most of the ride. The group split about 12 miles into the ride, when Jim flatted. Brian (on his new "Carrera") and Steve led the group the rest of the way. Riders: Don Whitehead (leader), Steve Mazeski, John Hinchey, Jim Forster, Brian Mitchell, Chris Laudo, Vaughn Good, and Diane Lausman.

Penn Manor Panorama (B) Apr 16
My first ever ride as leader went smoothly with only one other rider participating. Lou Gray and I enjoyed a beautiful spring ride on Easter Sunday afternoon. I look forward to a larger group the next time I lead a ride. Thank you Lou for attending. We chose to ride a little faster than the advertised 13 mph completing the route in just over 14mph. Riders: Brian Heiland (leader) and Lou Gray

Nissley Vineyard Ride (C) Apr 16
10 riders turned out on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon to tackle the "rolling" hills of western Lancaster County. Several riders reached top speeds in excess of 41 mph coming down one of the rollers! That was worth the climb! No mishaps, everyone enjoyed themselves, a few commented they'd like to see more rides on the western end. Riders: Steve Holland (leader), Chris Mayfield (sweep), Greg Mayfield, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Phil Wright, Craig Shreiner, Tom Mellinger, and non-LBC members Vicki Murphy Kendall and Marlyn Hahn.

Triple Play (A) Apr 23
I would like to thank Paul Swarm for emailing me earlier in the week to let me know the covered bridge at Log Cabin Road was closed. We took a detour and rode the hill on Rabbit Hill Road which is not as difficult as Log Cabin Road. The roads were wet and we rode and finished together. Damon Schlott was riding very strong. Tim Norejko rode uphill very well and Ken Lessans was strong and steady as always. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Tim Norejko, Damon Schlott and Ken Lessans.

Sunday Siesta (B) Apr 23
John M., the ride was not cancelled after all. Maybe you can join us the next time out. After a slight delay, the rain stopped, and we decided to give it a try. That turned out to be a good decision--giving way to an excellent ride! The course was still wet from record amounts of rain the day before, and a downpour leading up to the ride, but eventually it started clearing and the roads started drying. The riders commented that the course was very nice-a good mix of hills, long stretches of flats, and best of all-light traffic for the most part. There was one flat repair break at mile 29. So, Craig gets to add an extra mile for each mile that he had to ride with the rear tire going flat. He had spare tube and able to fix the flat to get back on the road. The pace slowed a bit after this break. But Craig missed the next reportable event, which occurred after he split off to head home. We were within 2 miles or so from the finish and near the crest of a slight knoll on Quarry Rd. when I gave Bill quite a start. I was pulled up out of the saddle with a severe cramp that literally locked my leg straight. I found out this is a very good way to come to a near stop instantly--painful, but effective. I thought sure I was going down on the deck, but luckily I was able to unclip from the other side and maintain some semblance of balance. Bill had no clue at first what was happening. After a bit of coaxing I was able relieve the cramp, and we are on our way again--a bit slower for the remaining 2 miles-but all in all a very good ride. We maintained a pace slightly faster than the advertised 14 mph-approx. 16.5 mph while actually in the saddle. Riders: Tom Barron (ride leader), Bill Angermier, and Craig Shreiner.

New Witness Tree Trek (B) Apr 23
This was a pretty nasty morning. I cancelled the ride at 7:30 a.m. but apparently 5 people did show up. From what I understand they had an enjoyable morning. Riders: John Renard (leader).

Speedwell Forge Repose (C) Apr 23
Rained out. Riders: Lloyd Melhorn (leader)

Chickies Creek Long (D) Apr 23
Another washout but a few of us tried; for a little time. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Lew Hershey, Ray Landis, and Kathy Brugh.

Safe Harbor (A) Apr 29
Scott and I were the only riders who showed up on this beautiful spring morning. We decided to add the Highville hill to the ride and still finished at the advertised 18 mph pace. Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader) and Scott Wagner.

Adopt-A-Highway (D) Apr 29
Great ride for those of us who haven't ridden much this year so far. Dottie lead from the rear as usual. Riders: Dottie Sheehy (leader), Harry Campbell (sweep), J. White, Janielle Willemin, Jack Mentzer, and Gary Musser.

Hammer Creek (B) Apr 29
A beautiful, cool spring morning brought out all those who hadn't done the State Police Metric. Candae arrived with her new bike, (Cannon)Dale, and all of us who were riding Treks breathed a sigh of relief as her old bike had a decided dislike for all things carbon! Before we started, Ray and Steve, both recovering from surgeries, said not to wait for them as they might turn off. As one would expect on this ride, the fast guys took off on Log Cabin Rd. But that was OK as the rest of us enjoyed the great ride. At around 20 miles we came upon one of the fast guys, Kevin, who had a flat and a bad tube. We lent him one of ours and he showed his gratitude by graciously riding with us for a couple of miles. When we returned there was a note from Ray saying that he and Steve took a "wrong turn" that cut out about 5 miles. That's their story and I'm, sure they'll stick to it. Riders: John Mullineaux (leader), Brian Heiland, Steve Schmohl, Ray Landis, Kevin Weber, Rich Wagner, Roger Sheaffer, Candae Deen, Dave Kessler, Bill Ambler, Warren Buch. Chris Laudo, Heidi Hendrix, Bill Ressel, Dirk Suereth. David G. Hooper, David J. Hooper, Jim Koelsch.

Speedwell Forge Loop (C) Apr 29
52 F to start / 56 F by end of the ride, sunny, and a slight breeze An excellent day; great weather to ride! Three of us met at the Speedwell Forge Lake parking area, along Lake View Rd. Speedwell Forge Loop is the same course as described in the guidebook Short Bike Rides in Eastern Pennsylvania (by William Simpson) and that used for the Lancaster YMCA Triathlon with an added optional 5-mile loop at the end to make it 30 miles. It is considered rolling hills, but there are a few that make for a decent climb. Despite these hills, we were still able to maintain slightly better than our advertised pace at 12.5 mph. Probably the only reportable incident was our coming down a hill on Penryn Rd. at a pretty good clip to sling-shot up the other side, when we encountered one of Lancaster County's finest (and freshly loaded) manure spreaders. That'll take the wind out of ya' to say the least. Just an added bonus you won't get in most other areas. It's great to ride in Lancaster County! So, all in all - It was a great ride! A rather small, but good group (if you can call 3 riders a group) to ride with; and a nice course! Riders: Tom Barron (leader), Tracy Irvine, and Stephen Ransing

Penn Manor Panorama (C) Apr 29
After doing our community service of Adopt-the-Highway we were ready to go for a ride. The weather was perfect for enjoying the beautiful countryside of Manor Township. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Carl Kreider, John Gantz, Jeff & Pearl Delong, and Mike Gibson Cornwall Furnace (A) Apr 30 Great day for a ride on a great course. The lead pack averaged 19 mph. Riders: Tim Ihrig (leader), Damon Schlott, Dave Cromer, Mark Buckwalter, Barry Lavender, Tim Norejko, and Ken Lessans.

Giro d'Earl (C) Apr 30
Mendal crashed coming down Log Cabin Road. Just a couple of scrapes on Mendel but his bike took a beating. Riders: Jack Bingham (leader), Pam Klingensmith (sweep), Scott Jones, Michelle Bingham, Bob Colton, Bill Amber, Mendel Sharir, Diane Lausman, Tom Mellinger, and Randy Haluck.

Nissley Vineyard Ride (B) Apr 30
Nary a cloud in the sky, lots of sunshine, temps in the upper 60s and light winds from the west helped bring out 9 riders for this "rolling" 30 mile ride. Lew and Kathy had ridden the Police ride in Hershey on Saturday- what a great day for a century 100.35miles all told. We all stayed together for the first 15 miles. John M, Celeste and I had fallen back a mile or so; and just before the turn to head into Nissley, we decided to stay straight in hopes of catching the group. Wouldn't you know it, they were waiting for us. As we continued on Stonemill Rd, I got a phone call and had to stop. The group continued and I thought I could catch them, but the nasty last section of Stonemill did me in and "crawled" up the hill. Thinking the group might have stopped at Hess's, off Rte 230, I rode through. No one in sight. I made my left onto Shwanger Rd and then got lost. Ended up riding up to Ridge Rd. Great look of the valley below, just outside of E-town. I meandered along and recognized Pleasant View Rd and knew Risser Mill Rd was further down. To cut my losses, I made a right onto Snyder Rd which took me back to Rte 230 in Mt Joy. Decided by now that the group was probably nearing the end of the ride, so I cut off about 2.5 miles. I sauntered into the back of Donegal HS only to see JP and Celeste riding back home. In the parking lot was the rest of the gang. Sounded like they had a miscue as well. More importantly, everyone had a great time, no flats and no mishaps. Kathy, thank you for the tasty pumpkin bread with peanut butter sandwich at the start. Riders: Sylvia Newcomer (leader), John Mullineaux, Mike Gibson, Kathy Brugh, Lew Hershey, Dave Harris, Bill Ressel, Craig Shreiner, John Peregoy and Celeste Neuhard.

Chickies Creek Long (B) Apr 30
What a gorgeous day! Starting temp 51° with a great group of 19 riders. Except for a few breakaway riders, the group was able to stay together most of the ride. Ended with an average speed of 13.3 mph and 62°. John P, John R and Bill W started to go off course because they didn't think they needed a stinkin' cue sheet, but the peloton was able to get their attention before they went too far. Great day! Riders: Carol Weisser (leader), Ray Landis, Steve Schmohl, Harry Campbell, Mike Gibson, Candae Deen, Ed Gower, Rich Wagner, Kim Lausch, C. Davis, John Donati, Mary Stadden, Bill Weisser, John Gantz, Curtis Palmer, Craig Shreiner, Matt London, Kevin Lunz, and John Peregoy.

Betsy's Sunday Spin (D) Apr 30
9 riders turned out on a beautiful sunny day with temperatures flirting with 70°. We had a bit of a head wind for what seemed like most of the ride, but I'm sure we just imagined that it changed direction every time we did!! No mishaps or incidents to report. Riders: Steve Holland (leader), Karen Drawbaugh, Jim Payton, Helen Weber, Joe Auchey, Jim Drumm, Dottie Sheehy, and non-LBC members Amy Sahm and Rose Phillips.

Gauge Your Fitness (A) Apr 30
Nice day for a ride. Wind from the east made us work for the first half of the ride, but rewarded us with a fast trip home. The group split into 3 parts, with Dale & Neil leading the charge at 18+mph. Dirk, Mike, and Warren were in pursuit and came in around 17.5 mph. Carl, Don and I rolled in around 16.9 mph. Dirk reports a new personal best speed of 52 mph coming down Ranck Rd. Riders: Andrew Mead (leader), Mike Lutz, Carl Law-Landis, Neil Fickes, Warren Buch, Dale Burkholder, Dirk Suereth and non-LBC members: Ron Herr and Don Witmer.
