LBC Rides from the Past - August 2006
Brusters (Ice Cream Ride) Aug 2 Hot, hot, hot. At the
start of the ride (6:30 p.m.), it was 95 degrees. Despite the heat, we had 13
riders. Kelly Palmer rode as the stoker on her father's tandem. Jeremiah
Hendrix rode in the trailer behind his father's bike and his brother pedalled
his own bicycle. By the end of the ride, it had cooled down to a balmy 89.
Riders: Gary Musser (leader), Verna Moseman, Rachel Kreider, Carl Kreider, Amy
Mithcell, Gary Ballina, Curtis Palmer, Kelly Palmer, Rodney Moseman, Heidi
Hendrix, Mike, David, and Jeremiah Hendrix.
Tom's Special (D) Aug 5 Riders: Steve Holland (leader),
Amy Sahn, Ray Landis, Dave Stephenson, Linda Wagner, Penny Kulp, Sue Wood, and
Carol Bowers.
York County Surprise (Tandem) Aug 5 After a week of new
100° heat, no one was interested in an afternoon ride. Roxann and I enjoyed
a 49 mile ride through York and Adams County. Riders: Dan & Roxann Bare
(leaders).
Granny to Gretna (B) Aug 5 Riders: Bill Ambler
(leader), Mark Kaufman, Rick Reisinger, Andy Hessler, Jim Toomey, Mark Ward,
Jim Drumm, Roger Sheaffer, Tom Rauba, George Dailey, Randy Haluck, Thomas
Barron, Marcy Diem, Mike & Heidi Hendrix, and non-LBC members, Harry Fox,
Dan Snyder, Katie Schultz, and Steve Farrah.
Stausstown Ride (A) Aug 5 Stausstown is a good training
route for the Nightmare Ride. The second half has more hills than the first
half of the ride. The scenery was great and there wasn't a lot of traffic. We
had a good group of riders. There are a lot of fit riders in LBC. Riders: Kyle
Awkerman (leader), Ed Fearnow, Mike Lutz, Tom Hunt, Marlin Hess, Damon Schlott,
Don Kulp, Paul Smeltz, Jon Lyons, Brian Sowatsky, Mark Buckwalter, Scott
Wagner, and non-LBC member Bill Stevens.
Druck Valley Sally (A) Aug 6 The peloton set out on a
picture perfect day to reconnoiter the cols on the York County side of the
river. Several non LBC members ventured to join the group for what turned out
to be an Hors Categorie day. It seemed like Floyd Landis himself was up front
pushing the pace and many of us did all we could to rejoin the leaders. I
suspect I saw a new max heart rate 3 or 4 times and no amount of EPO,
testosterone gel, or other banned substance would have made a difference. Ed
"I'm a retired Cat 1" Krasnai pummeled the peloton and pulled out of site at
the top of every climb. Ken "I'm recovering from yesterday's race" Warehaw must
use special recovery drink and had no trouble pulling back gaps even after a
one mile ascent of Ducktown Road. Neil "Vinikourov" Fickes tried to disrupt the
climbing flow with vicious attacks at every opportunity while Mark "the Diesel"
Buckwalter seemed to never shift out of his 53-11, even on the brutal ascent of
Tower Road. Tom "Mr. Steady" Hunt, Barry "the Complete Package" Lavender and
myself lost contact with the leaders just before crossing the river, but dug
deep to limit our losses on GC. I could have sworn I heard Phil Ligget and Paul
Sherwin saying over race radio "the elastic has snapped" on every climb. Joe
"broken knee" Robinson paced himself well on his first ride back after an
injury. Dave Wilson and Jason Ayer gave a valiant rookie LBC effort for the
White Jersey but ultimately the brutal nature of this Pyrenean
eh Yorkian
stage took its toll on all of us. It is humbling to realize that our average
speed of 17.5 to 18 mph over 44 miles is light years away from the 19+ mph
average on the Alpe D'Huez Stage over 118 miles, 38 of which are uphill! Ken
"Glucose Exhaustion" Lessans - leader.
CVHS Morgantown (B) Aug 6 Riders: Brian Mitchell
(leader), Jim Weaver, Becky Weaver, Tricia Kitch, Cindy Davis, John Donati,
Curtis Palmer, Sean Cavanaugh, Mark Kaufman, Steve Gerber, Mike Lutz, Don Kulp,
Dirk Suereth, Warren Buch, Damon Schlott, Tim Good, Craig Shreiner, Jessica
Marcini, Tim Ihrig, Rick Reisinger, Randy Haluck, Diane Lausman, Candae Deen,
Bob Turner, Scott Wagner, and non-LBC members: Harry Fox, Sam Spicer, Justin
Hartman and Rick Heisey.
Ride to Manheim Long (C) Aug 6 All member riders had a
great time until John Gantz went down and suffered a broken elbow-get well
& get back on the bike soon. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Mike Gibson,
Ray Landis, Rich Wagner, John Gantz, Judy Flowers, David Flowers, Gary Musser,
Kim Lausch, Erica Cavanaugh, Sarah Dempsey, Carol Bowers, Bill Ressel, Lou
Gray, Kevin Lunz, Nancy Youst, Roger Sheaffer, Jim Bar, Carol Weisser, Dave
Kessler, and non-LBC member Bart Torre.
Betsy’s Sunday Spin (D Aug 6 Riders: Karen Drawbaugh (leader), Jim Payton (sweep), Steve Snyder, Pam Klingensmith,
Phil Wright, Linda Wright, Jonas Fisher, Dave Stephenson, Barb Koppenhafer, Tanya
Mason, Ritch Mason, Sue Wood, Steve Holland, Pam Williams, Janielle Willemin, Dotty
Sheehy, Christina Dubin and Richard Dubin
East Pete to the Airport (Ice Cream) Aug 9 A perfect
evening for a bike ride to get ice cream. Welcome to all, especially the new
riders. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Dave Stephenson, Carole Brubaker, Gary
Ballina, Tim Good, Tim, Misty, Harry & Madison Ludwig, Curtis Palmer, Erin
Palmer, Linda Wagner, Rich Wagner, Tanya Mason, Ritch Mason and Amy
Mitchell.
Welsh Century (A) Aug 12
Riders: Curtis Palmer (leader), Mike Lutz, Ed Fearnow, Tom Hunt, Damon Schlott, Warren Buch, John Lyons, Kyle Awkerman, Tim Good, and Scott Wagner.
Warrior's Revenge (Tandem) Aug 12 Crystal clear skies,
70°F temperatures, gentle breeze. Everything was perfect except for 2
things: Warwick High School parking lot was charging $5.00 per car to park
because of the Lititz Art & Craft Show and no other tandems (or other
bikers) were in evidence at the start. After waiting a reasonable length of
time, we completed the 32 mile circuit. No one got lost. Better luck next time!
Riders: Jim Nissley (leader), Dot Nissley (sweep).
Manheim Auction Loop (B) Aug 12 Another hot summer day
wishing we all could have ridden our bikes thru puddles or sprays of water. No
such luck. The parking lot at Catholic High filled up quickly and then I
realized that Candae Deen was leading the C-ride Roots Auction'n Return, more
or less a shorter version of the "rolling" Manheim Auction Loop at a B-pace.
Interestingly enough, some riders signed up as B rider than aborted, riding the
C-ride, I cannot give a name but he rides a purple beast with handlebars with
stripes. The following riders, mostly "real" Bs and a few A riders: Mike Gibson
[never to be seen again], Brian Mitchell [rocket man], Andy Hessler, Jim
Toomey, Rich Wagner, Mike Tshudy, Lou Gray, Bob Long, David Y Hooper, David J
Hooper, Matt London-who so graciously loaned one of his water bottles to Heidi
Hendrix [her hubbie is still recovering from Lyme's disease], Craig Shreiner,
Paul Smeltz, Lauri Amway, Jill Baumgartner - who I understand got "lost", Dick
Suereth, TraceLyn Gardner, John Donati with Cindy Davis and Diane Lausman,
Larry Keating. We were also joined by 2 new riders to the Club: Dave Stephen
and Todd Peterson. The non-member who joined this wild group was Dan Snyder. We
let Candae's large C group lead out first. In the meanwhile, we decided to take
the straight shot, staying on Pleasure Rd, so as not to "intertwine'. In less
than 5 miles I was dropped. Rode the course for a bit, took a nice break at
Stauffers on Rt. 501, spoke to an elderly gentleman who had lived in France and
still claimed that they are sore losers. He believed Floyd to be telling the
truth and wished him well in clearing his name. I continued over to Lititz Rd
thinking I could at least catch the C-riders. No one insight. At this point I
decided to ride back to York and God Bless my son for picking me up at the base
of Cool Creek Hill. Pretty soon word will get out that I lead from the back. So
do I get double points? I'm sure everyone had fun.
Roots Auction & Return (C) Aug 12 A huge group of
cyclists was milling about in the parking lot of Lancaster Catholic when I
arrived. Uh-oh - do I have enough cue sheets? Wait - I see some faster riders
infiltrating the crowd - whew! There's a B ride leaving at the same time. (Uh,
I knew that - I scheduled it!) Anyway, we sorted ourselves out and the C group
departed for an enjoyable ride. Joining us were Ed and Renee DiPilla from
Quarryville, who traded in their usual hilly route for a flatter ride. John
Renard signed in to ride both the B and the C rides - don't ask me how he did
it, but I'll bet he was tired afterward. The pace was a little faster than
usual, but manageable with the flatter terrain. Riders: Candae Deen (leader),
Jonas Fisher, Ray Landis, Gary Musser, Marilyn Gelsinger, Alan Savage, Jim
Hurst, Carol Weisser (Sweep), John Mullineaux, Bill Ambler, Carl Kreider, Kim
Lausch, Ed DiPilla, Renee DiPilla, Harold Fulmer, Rachel Kreider, Jim Bair,
Terry Klugh, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Mike Gibson, and non-LBC member Katie
Schultz.
Metric Century (A) Aug 13 Perfect weather conditions
helped us average 20 mph. Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader), Don Kulp, Tom Hunt,
Gil, Mary Ann Linde, Dave Simons, Andrew Mead, Mike Lutz, Curtis Palmer, Scott
Wagner, Barry Lavender and non-LBC member Ken Warcham.
CBMC Workers Ride Aug 13 Riders: Ed Gower (leader), Lou
Gray, Mike Gibson, Lew Hershey, Kathy Brugh, Bill Crawford, Bob Colton, Steve
Schmohl, Jim Bair, and Tony & Susan Denunzio.
Turnpike Tour 2 (B) Aug 13 Six riders showed for this
tour of northwestern Lancaster County on a beautiful October morning in August.
The group stayed together for the entire ride averaging only slightly higher
than the advertised pace while enjoying the perfect weather. Riders: Dirk
Suereth (leader), Jessica Marcini, Craig Shreiner, Chris Laudo, Bob Turner, and
non-LBC member Justin Hartman.
Workers ¼ Metric (D) Aug 13 Riders: Barb
Koppenhafer (leader), Bob Wohlford, Dave Stephenson, Linda Wagner, Pam Tronsor,
John Rohrkemper, and non-LBC members Devorah Zamansky, Michael Zamansky, Natan
Zamansky, and Batya Zamansky.
Ice Cream Topped with Lititz (Ice Cream) Aug 16 Ms.
Julia Mason (age 6) led the ride on the difficult Lime Rock Road and Lexington
Road section allowing the leader to save his strength for the "after ice cream"
portion of the ride. Riders: John Cardos (leader), Linda Wagner, Rick Wagner,
Brian Winn, Tanya Mason and Julia Mason.
Chickies Creek Long (D) Aug 19 The leader once again
rode over from Mountville; the threat of rain loomed overhead. Clouds were dark
and menacing. On the ride down Church Street, I saw 2 riders approach from Nolt
Rd. Still, I kept up my pace as I was on a mission to be 15 minutes early. The
following group rode this very pleasant ride of 22 miles: Ray Landis, Harry
Campbell, Pam Williams, Jim Peyton-who also offered to sweep, guess he thought
with us wearing our ride-leader jerseys, we were well suited for our positions.
Also along: Doug Stark, Carl and Rachel Kreider-who rode over. Dave Stephenson,
Irene Camp [yahoo, her house sold here], Chuck Wissing [still waiting for his
house to sell in Baltimore]. Both these fine people are moving to Arizona
permanently. Linda Wagner along with a couple who are new to the club: Jim and
Michelle Stoudt - they rode over from top of Columbia, going up Ironville Pike.
Jim and Michelle have been riding the last 2 years, but this was there first
official club ride. Jim is awesome to watch as he 'arm' pedals his bike up
hills. Jim told me that his longest ride this year has been 56 miles and his
best riding is Bossler Road and to Nissley Winery. Michelle is a hairdresser
along with tanning beds in her Mt. Joy office. Jim has a hobby store in Mt.
Joy-remote control planes, boats, and what have you. Another new ride from the
Chester area [and she's a sheriff, so all you speeders watch out], Chris
Willard, riding a "Trek" frame that's been to France and barely escaped a fire.
Several non-members who are here for the CBMC event, wanted to get "Loosened"
up: Karl and Joann Kunx from Brooklyn, NY and Wanda Scott [?Columbus, OH] and
Jack Wallick from Massachusetts. Wanda and Jack are friends of Doug Starks,
they met in Florida. What a variety of bikers. Everyone grouped together and
rode comfortable paces. And no rain! Oh, Chuck, broke a cable and had to ride
in the small gear ring the last 5/6 miles. I rode Jim Stoudt part way home as I
waved him off at Nolt Rd. I really didn't want to climb Ironville Pike and my
son needed the car. See you all on the road again. We had fun! The leader from
the rear as always, Sylvia Newcomer.
Dessert Before Lunch #1 (Tandem) Aug 19 Great ride,
great weather. It is always nice to meet new tandem riders. Ice cream makes a
great conversation starter. Riders: Rodney & Verna Moseman (leaders), John
& Janet Weber, and Gary Musser (1/2 tandem)
Buena Vista Long (C) Aug 19 The weather was nice for a
Saturday morning ride. The ride was uneventful and we stayed together as a
group. Riders: Lloyd Melhorn (leader), Mendy Sharir, Rich Wagner, Bill Ambler,
Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, John Cardos, Dirk Suereth, Carol Weisser, Jim
Drumm, Jack Bingham, Roger Sheaffer, Ritch Mason, and Bill Ressel.
Farmersville-Hinkletown (A) Aug 19 Short + flat = fast.
Riders: Marlin Hess (leader), Brian Sowatsky, Tom Hunt, Don Kulp, Mark
Buckwalter, Carl Laws-Landis, Ken Lessans, Tim Norejko, Scott Wagner, John
Lyons, Dale Burkholder, and non-LBC member Bart Torre.
Freeze & Frizz (Ice Cream) Aug 23 We arrived at the
start point to find the LCHS marching band using our parking lot for band
practice! We eventually found all four riders and set off for the Freeze and
Frizz where most of the group enjoyed a frozen custard cone. A pleasant ride
with no mishaps! Riders: John Furry (leader), Ritch Mason, John Cardos, and
Irene Camp.
Penryn Promenade (All Class Ride) Aug 26 Wow! 80 riders
showed up on an overcast morning to do the all class ride. A few miles out I
passed by Brian on the side of the road changing a flat. Since I was riding at
the back I saw very few riders on the route. When I arrived at Molly's most of
the riders had been there and were on their way again. Back at the start I
observed an empty parking lot so I assume everyone had a good, uneventful ride.
Riders: Rachel Kreider, Carol Weisser, Don Whitehead, Dave Kessler, Jeff Hosal,
Bill Crawford, Denny Schneider, Bruce Anderson, Linda & Eric Nichols, Lori
& Haeoh Jung, Mendy Sharir, David Wise, Harold Fulmer, Candae Deen, Andy
Hessler, Steve Ransing, Gary Musser, Tom Owsinski, John Mullineaux, Rich

Hirsch and Jim Harkless.
Hammer Creek (A) Aug 27
Riders: Curtis Palmer, (leader), Mike Lutz, Warren Buch, Jude Sharp, Mark Buckwalter, and non-LBC member Ed Krasnai.
Chicken Barn Ride (B) Aug 27
The ride was delayed a bit because of rain and a few riders that rode to the start
decided to forego the ride because of the rain. The three of us though opted to brave it after it stopped raining, and only
experienced a few other showers once out on the course. But it was so humid that it might as well have been raining. I must admit the ride leader quickly assumed the sweep on this ride as the
pace was held at about 18 mph for at least the first half. There was a slight detour due to road construction/relocation on S. Strickler
Road but it didn’t do much to the overall mileage. We finished the 41.5 mile course at about 16.5 to 17.0 mph.Riders:Tom Barron (leader),
Craig Shreiner and Seth Brennan
Oregon Dairy Special (Ice Cream) Aug 30 Cloudy all day
but no rain for the ice cream ride. Madison, 9, and Harry, 11, joined us and
did a great job for their first club ride. Oregon Dairy had delicious ice cream
and frozen yogurt and playground and goats and deer. We were all treated to a
beautiful sunset along Creek Road. I noticed 2 newborn calves who came close to
the fence to get a good look at us. All of us had an enjoyable ride. Riders:
Janielle Willemin (leader), Chris Longenecker and Ellis Beattie (sweeps),
Elizabeth Beattie, Rick Shoup, and Tim, Misty, Harry and Madison Ludewig.
